How might the Taranto attack plan change if the British carrier force had many more fighters?
Short answerFighters could accompany each wave, drop flares, and suppress balloons while torpedo and dive bombers attacked separate target sets.
NotesThe Taranto attack plan belonged to Lumley Lyster rather than Andrew Cunningham. With a much larger fighter force, about eight fighters could accompany each of three waves built around torpedo and dive bombers. The fighters could illuminate targets with flares and attack barrage balloons, while dive bombers concentrated on oil facilities and inner ships and torpedo aircraft attacked vessels in the outer harbour. Extra fighters would change the strike's supporting tasks and sequencing as well as its air protection.
