Essex's casualty figures show how her gun crews were disabled

Essex's losses were concentrated among the men serving her guns, while damage to her stern, steering, masts, and battery prevented effective resistance.

Notes

Phoebe suffered four killed and seven wounded, while Cherub lost one killed and three wounded. Essex had fifty-eight dead and sixty-five wounded. Fifty-five of the dead and sixty of the wounded came from her gun crews, helping explain the collapse of her return fire. More than two hundred shot, mostly 18-pounder, struck the American frigate. Her stern was smashed, the wheel and rudder damaged, all three masts hit, and fifteen guns disabled.
