Esmeralda and the first Elswick protected-cruiser formula

Meet the compact cruiser whose speed, armament, and protective deck established the influential Elswick type.

Notes

Esmeralda is introduced as a small but unusually consequential warship, commissioned by Chile and later operated by Japan as Izumi. George Wightwick Rendel's design placed machinery and other vital spaces beneath an arched steel deck, while cork-filled cellular compartments supported buoyancy. That balance of protection, speed, and striking power helped define the Elswick protected cruiser. Her 28-year career connected South American coastal warfare with the reconnaissance that preceded the Battle of Tsushima.
