Why escort carriers mattered against shadowing aircraft

Trinidad's detection shows how carrier aircraft could break enemy reconnaissance contact before bombers arrived.

Notes

Escort carriers could do more than shoot down aircraft once an attack began. Their fighters could drive off shadowers before those aircraft reported a convoy or fleet's position, making it harder for bombers and torpedo bombers to find their target. In a vast sea area, breaking continuous reconnaissance contact gave a formation a chance to disappear again. The passage links that outer layer of air defence to the Invincible class, Cold War carrier roles, and fleet protection in later periods. Organic aviation therefore mattered before an enemy strike reached the formation.
