At roughly 33,500 tons, the proposed ships were heavier, shorter, beamier, and deeper-draughted than the Renowns. Their 32 boilers produced 90,000 metric horsepower. Renown's longer, narrower hull, 42 boilers, and 112,000 shaft horsepower contributed to a 4.7-knot advantage. The quoted endurance figures, 5,500 nautical miles at 14 knots for Ersatz Yorck and 4,000 at 18 for Renown, cannot be compared directly because the cruising speeds differ. At the same speed, their ranges may have been closer. In return, the German design carried eight 15-inch guns, a substantial casemate secondary battery, and three 600 mm torpedo tubes against Renown's two 533 mm tubes. Its planned complement of 1,227 was about 274 more than Renown's. Like Japanese policy, German battlecruiser design anticipated that these ships might reinforce or even enter the battle line because the High Seas Fleet lacked enough battleships.

The cost of a heavily armed German battlecruiser
Displacement, hull form, boilers, crew, and guns show how the Ersatz Yorck traded speed for a heavier, more battle-line-ready design.
