The unbuilt Ersatz Monarch super-dreadnoughts

The Ersatz Monarch design would have enlarged Austro-Hungarian capital ships around ten 14-inch guns and dense close defense.

Notes

The Ersatz Monarch design enlarged the Tegetthoff concept around ten 14-inch guns and an intended speed of about 21 knots. A hull roughly twenty to twenty-five meters longer promised better hydrodynamic efficiency while using the maximum size the available yards could support. Its layered secondary and light batteries would have exposed an attacking destroyer to several 5.9-inch weapons plus numerous smaller guns from almost any approach. That close-defense arrangement made particular sense in the confined Adriatic. The design nevertheless depended on Yarrow boilers from Britain, a supply relationship that became impossible once Austria-Hungary and Britain were at war.
