Why are armed forces interested in greener energy and transport technology?
Short answerEfficiency and local generation reduce fuel logistics, provided the equipment does not introduce unacceptable battlefield vulnerabilities.
NotesMilitary interest in environmental technology follows directly from the cost of supplying deployed forces. Solar or other local generation can reduce the fuel and battery supply that must be transported to deployed units. More efficient engines create the same benefit by lowering demand across the supply chain. Exposed power systems on vehicles may introduce electronic-warfare or other vulnerabilities, so an environmentally attractive technology still has to survive its operating environment.
