Proposals for Nelson-style 24.5-inch torpedoes would have imposed extra weight, width, and handling penalties on the cruiser. The fitted sixteen 21-inch tubes already provided an eight-torpedo broadside without compromising the design as severely. More important operationally, the Emerald class combined speed and maneuverability with an ability to keep station in difficult seas. That endurance let Enterprise move among diplomacy, crew transport, patrol, convoy work, and combat across the Royal Navy's worldwide commitments.
