Aviation facilities complicated an evolved E-class layout

Keeping the Seafox in a more heavily turreted E class would have forced choices about aircraft numbers, the midships gun position, and fire safety.

Notes

Continued E-class development would have had to reconsider where the Fairey Seafox sat once more turrets filled the deck. One possibility was to omit the aircraft from ordinary ships and give a class or flotilla leader a pair in place of the midships gun. The existing catapult position looked untidy and could allow a burning aircraft to threaten the 6-inch mounting below. Because the catapult could rotate, the crew might instead send a burning aircraft over the side.
