Displacement growth and treaty figures

Enterprise's sharply different reported displacement figures show why treaty-era numbers need careful reading.

Notes

Enterprise was nominally designed for 19,800 tons standard displacement and 25,500 tons at full load. An October 1943 figure instead put her at 21,000 tons standard and 32,000 tons full load. The standard figure rose by 1,200 tons, while the full-load figure rose by about 6,500 tons, more than one fifth of the earlier total. A change that large should have affected draft and hull performance more visibly than the ship's appearance suggests. The discrepancy leaves open whether the original declaration, the later figure, or both were inaccurate. Treaty-era displacement numbers should therefore be read as official claims with limits, rather than exact measurements in every case.
