Personal accounts of impractical engineering changes

Personal engineering anecdotes illustrate how technical objections can be lost when senior requests go unchallenged.

Notes

Drachinifel recalls office-engineering situations in which senior people demanded changes without understanding the design. His example contrasts implementing every request with retaining the previous design so an unworkable alteration can be reversed. He also describes the accountability problem when a manager later denies having requested the change. Alex Clarke adds his own experience of correcting arithmetic that had been stretched to satisfy a senior decision-maker. These are personal illustrations of the need to retain technical reasoning and responsibility, rather than evidence about a particular Constellation change order.
