Chapter ยท 1:58:43-2:05:12

Pinning the centre while attacking both wings

A combined-arms plan fixes the centre, attacks opposite wings with infantry and cavalry, and converts flank pressure into artillery superiority.

Notes

The plan pins the enemy centre and avoids a costly direct push against its long line. Covered by artillery, infantry press one wing while cavalry strikes the other. The enemy's reaction opens the rear of its formation and exposes horse artillery and a general to quick attacks. The cavalry withdraws after the raid, leaving the opposing line with a new threat on its flank. By 2:05 the enemy has lost its artillery while the attacking guns are concentrated against the remaining troops. Fixing the centre and combining attacks on the wings has dismantled the linear position.
