Making an attacker cross the ground first

Waiting for the attacking force makes fatigue more important than the morale gain from early aggression.

Notes

The defending line stays in place so the attackers must cross the ground and arrive tired. Aggression can bring a morale benefit, but fatigue is treated as the more important constraint at the beginning of the battle. A comparison with fencing shows how holding position can deny an opponent the response they expected and force them to change plans. Patient defence can make the opponent commit first and begin the fight at a disadvantage.
