Matching artillery, infantry, and cavalry to the threat

A short tactical explanation sets out the counterweights between artillery, cavalry, and massed infantry.

Notes

Artillery is presented as the answer to massed infantry, while infantry is needed against a cavalry-heavy force. Cavalry, in turn, threatens artillery, and infantry can protect the guns from that attack. Force composition therefore depends on the opposing mix instead of simply increasing one arm. This makes the relationship between the three arms easy to follow, though the exact balance belongs to the game's mechanics.
