Hunts and upgraded prewar ships, including old V and W-class destroyers, filled some of the Navy's immediate escort needs. That cushion helps explain the repeated changes from one emergency batch to the next. HMS Savage is the sharpest example. A ship meant to add wartime numbers was reworked on the slip to try a new armament.
