Why the Battle of Elli has several names

Greek and Ottoman naming conventions frame the same engagement differently, while the outcome shows why sea control matters more than ship sinkings alone.

Notes

The engagement is commonly called the Battle of Elli, but Greek and Turkish usage also associates it with Helles or Imbros. Some accounts call the result inconclusive because neither side lost a ship. The losses given are two Greeks killed, 18 Ottomans killed and 41 Ottomans wounded, with limited damage to a battleship. The Ottoman withdrawal nevertheless left the Greek fleet dominant at sea. Control of the sea provides the basis for calling it a Greek victory despite the limited material losses.
