Electronic attack opens routes through air defenses

The EA-18G Growler represents a carrier air group's ability to attack the defensive network itself so that the rest of the strike package can get through.

Notes

Electronic attack differs from merely avoiding or confusing an enemy sensor. Aircraft such as the EA-18G Growler are intended to suppress an integrated air-defense network and open routes for aircraft that do not possess the same degree of stealth or low-level penetration capability. That makes electronic warfare a force multiplier for every other aircraft in the package. It also creates a continuous competition, because jammers and the radars they oppose must be repeatedly upgraded against one another.
