Chapter ยท 1:44:49-1:50:55

An 18,000-mile voyage delivered an exhausted fleet

Different routes, months of steaming, tropical conditions, and no final refit left the Russians facing Japan at their weakest material point.

Notes

The Russian detachments split between routes through Suez and around Africa before gathering in French Indochina. Every extra mile imposed machinery hours, hull wear, crew fatigue, and additional opportunities for damage. After the voyage, the fleet needed dry docks, inspection, repair, rest, stores, and training, but no secure nearby facility could restore it. The only intended destinations were inadequate Vladivostok and already besieged Port Arthur, both beyond Japanese bases. Togo's rested fleet could therefore fight on its front porch while the Russians entered battle at the end of an unsupported deployment.
