How the Eight-Eight Fleet balanced capital-ship types

Japan carried Tsushima's balanced-force logic into a plan that mixed dreadnoughts, battlecruisers, and two styles of fast battleship before treaty limits intervened.

Notes

Japan retained a balanced capital-ship concept after Tsushima. The Eight-Eight plan combined four heavy dreadnoughts, four battlecruisers, and eight fast battleships, half closer to dreadnoughts and half closer to battlecruisers. That composition tried to combine gun power and speed across the force. The Washington Naval Treaty stopped the program before completion. Japan sought a seventy-percent capital-ship ratio at the negotiations, which can be compared loosely with its balance against Russia at Tsushima, depending on how the different ships are counted.
