Why Midshipman Edward Ashmore was a calibrated choice

Edward Ashmore combined local language and family experience with the low rank of a midshipman, making his party capable but difficult to portray as an aggressive escalation.

Notes

Brind selected nineteen-year-old Midshipman Edward Ashmore to lead the party sent to the merchantman. Ashmore came from a Royal Navy family with several generations of service, had spent time in the Far East, and already possessed useful linguistic and regional knowledge. His later career included service as First Sea Lord, while at Tsingtao his junior rank kept the appointment diplomatically restrained. Sending a midshipman carried the same message as sending Folkestone: the party was capable, but deliberately small and junior.
