Edgar-class machinery, range, armament, and protection

A technical tour covers the class's 20-knot machinery, nominal 10,000-mile range, mixed 9.2-inch and 6-inch battery, protected deck, casemates, and conning tower.

Notes

Four double-ended cylindrical boilers supplied triple-expansion engines on two shafts, with forced draft producing the quoted 20-knot speed. The nominal 10,000-nautical-mile range at ten knots assumed favorable, direct steaming rather than storms, adverse currents, or wartime zigzagging. The protective deck arched over machinery, while armored casemates, gun shields, and a thick conning tower protected important fighting positions without a full belt. Together the figures show how endurance, speed, firepower, and selective armor defined a first-class protected cruiser.
