Eden trades torpedo emphasis for stronger guns

Eden's 1906 gun changes and two 18-inch torpedo tubes show the destroyer becoming a more balanced fighting ship.

Notes

Eden remained coal-powered and could make about 25½ knots, with some River-class ships recording 26½ knots. Its original battery combined a larger 12-pounder with five 6-pounders. In 1906, three shorter 12-pounders replaced the five smaller guns. The discussion identifies the 12-pounder with the familiar 3-inch or 76 mm gun family. Eden also carried two 18-inch torpedo tubes, compared with Charger's three tubes and single 12-pounder. This change gave the guns a larger share of the destroyer's fighting role while retaining a torpedo attack.
