Echo and Enterprise carry multibeam and single-beam sounders, side-scan sonar, current profilers, bottom samplers, and onboard planning and processing systems. They can embark a mine-countermeasures command team and provide tailored environmental information for submarines and amphibious forces. Second World War beach-reconnaissance teams and miniature submarines, followed by comparable survey work in the Falklands, provide historical precedents for collecting approach data before an amphibious force arrives. A hangar would extend the ships' reach, though it would also require more hull space and crew. Repeated surveys matter because seabeds, currents, and hazards continue to change after a chart is first published. Current charts keep ships away from danger before lifesaving equipment is ever needed.
