Early radar changes carrier and submarine warfare

Closer naval-air research could bring carrier direction and surface-search radar forward, making surfaced submarines and surprise approaches harder to conceal.

Notes

The propulsion partnership could establish a model for sharing radar work between the Admiralty and Air Ministry. Earlier carrier radar would improve aircraft direction and warn against surface forces even when no patrol aircraft was overhead. Surface-search sets could also detect submarines approaching above water, where many boats initially found and closed their targets. As resolution improved toward periscope detection, radar combined with ASDIC would place still more pressure on submarine attack tactics.
