Trace how carrier launch and recovery gear evolved

Early landing-weight limits, longitudinal deck wires, rolling recoveries, and accelerator terminology reveal how modern carrier systems grew from experimental practice.

Notes

Carrier recovery rules have always been shaped by deck machinery and aircraft weight. Aircraft once had to jettison unused ordnance when they could not land above a safe recovery weight. Early carrier aircraft could make rolling landings without modern transverse arresting cables, while the first longitudinal wires were intended to keep an aircraft from tipping over the deck edge. Carrier launch devices were also distinguished from catapults fitted to other warships by calling them accelerators. Modern deck acronyms grew from changing launch and recovery practices over time.
