An earlier US fast-battleship program could change fleet operations

Five early 28-knot battleships could give the US Navy more experience combining fast capital ships with carriers.

Notes

The proposed American quota replaces older battleships with five fast ships armed with the 16-inch/45. The gun choice distinguishes contemporary weapons from the later 16-inch/50 design, rather than denying the existence of earlier guns of that calibre and length. The new ships could operate with Lexington and Saratoga and give the US Navy experience coordinating fast capital ships and carriers in the early 1930s. Sustaining that force could also encourage orders for faster fleet oilers, because auxiliaries otherwise limit operational pace. British base chains shorten their oilers' shuttle routes, whereas American tankers must support movement across the Pacific. These are possible operational developments before the historical North Carolinas entered service.
