Merchant-marine roots of Dutch rating titles

Dutch non-commissioned titles reflect an age when armed merchant ships and warships shared much of the same professional vocabulary.

Notes

Sailor grades translate relatively directly, while quartermaster, boatswain, and skipper describe concrete responsibilities for stores, boats, steering, and navigation. The terminology reflects the Dutch maritime world in which a vessel might shift between trade and war service. A sailing master could take a merchant vessel to sea, while commissioned officers marked its employment as a warship. This continuity helps explain the businesslike character of the system.
