O 19 class: offensive minelaying from Fremantle

O 19 and O 20 finally gave the Dutch submarine force dedicated minelaying, and O 19 became one of Fremantle's most highly regarded boats.

Notes

Originally planned as colonial K boats, O 19 and O 20 were the Dutch fleet's only dedicated minelaying submarines. O 20 was lost in December 1941, but O 19 completed repeated patrols, sank ships, and laid disruptive offensive minefields from Fremantle. American commanders rated her among Task Force 71's most effective assets pound for pound. She grounded on Ladd Reef in July 1945, where USS Cod rescued the crew and joined in destroying the stranded hull to prevent capture. The class demonstrates how a small navy could combine torpedo attack with persistent mine threats that complicated an enemy's routes and schedules.
