O 12 class: escape, unexplained loss, and spare-parts triage

The four O 12-class boats split between German capture, Allied patrols, an unresolved disappearance, and the cannibalization needed to keep one survivor running.

Notes

O 12 was scuttled during the invasion, raised, repaired, and commissioned by Germany as UD-2. O 13 escaped to Britain, helped cover the Dunkirk evacuation, and then vanished on patrol without a confirmed attacker or discovered wreck. Competing mine and collision theories remain unproved, so the Dutch still treat her as on patrol. O 14 supported British anti-submarine trials but broke down as unique spare parts disappeared, and her crew transferred to a standardized S-class boat. Components from O 14 then helped O 15 remain operational until after Japan's surrender, making the class a compact lesson in exile-fleet logistics and maintenance triage.
