The K XIV class used four bow tubes, two stern tubes, and two trainable external 21-inch mounts ahead of the conning tower. Those traversing weapons widened the possible firing spread but were exposed, finicky, and difficult to maintain. American refits removed them from K XIV and K XV, along with a forward anti-aircraft gun. The surviving pair sank and damaged multiple Japanese ships, while sister boats were lost to a Japanese submarine, a mine, and wartime scuttling. The class shows both the tactical attraction of unusual firing arcs and the operational value of simplifying equipment that distant yards could not support.
