Chapter · 1:59:45-2:08:05

Dutch destroyers outlived their intended battlecruiser fleet

Fine Dutch fleet destroyers were designed to screen battlecruisers in Southeast Asia, then fought without that larger force and were dispersed into catastrophic wartime actions.

Notes

The Admiralen and Gerard Callenburgh designs are interpreted as escorts for a Dutch battlecruiser force intended to defend the East Indies. The battlecruisers were never built, leaving capable destroyers without the fleet structure that gave their design meaning. British service showed that ships such as Isaac Sweers could fit alongside Tribal-class destroyers even though a Tribal would not have been the ideal Dutch design. The ships then suffered severe losses in the Java Sea, Sunda Strait, Rotterdam, and other dispersed actions. Their fate demonstrates that a good ship cannot compensate for a missing force plan or penny-packet employment.
