Chapter · 34:39-38:15

Dupuy de Lome and the limits of a commerce raider

France's early armoured cruiser illustrates why endurance and fighting power alone do not make a useful global cruiser.

Notes

Dupuy de Lome was intended to attack merchant shipping on distant ocean routes. Its hull and restricted deck space made long-distance cruising and peacetime presence work uncomfortable and impractical. The lack of room for entertaining was an operational limitation rather than an aesthetic complaint. A cruiser must support combat operations and the human side of overseas naval service.
