Chapter ยท 31:11-32:31

Dunedin's captures, Audacity, and loss

Dunedin captured vessels carrying an Enigma machine and the future HMS Audacity before U-124 sank the cruiser with heavy loss of life.

Notes

Dunedin seized several enemy and Vichy French vessels early in the war. One captured tanker carried an Enigma cipher machine, so prize-taking also yielded intelligence. She captured the German merchant ship Hanover as well, and its conversion produced HMS Audacity, described here as the first escort carrier. Dunedin was sunk by two torpedoes from U-124 on 24 November 1941. Only 67 of 486 crew survived. The sinking belongs to the Royal Navy's severe losses before the end of 1942, after which a ship's odds of surviving the war rose sharply.
