Chapter ยท 2:23-4:21

Duca d'Aosta class speed, armament, and protection

A technical tour sets 36.5-knot speed and eight 152 mm guns against armor vulnerable even to destroyer- and cruiser-caliber fire.

Notes

The ships displaced about 8,450 tons standard and used six boilers with geared turbines for 110,000 shaft horsepower. The machinery supported a claimed 36.5 knots and a range of 3,900 nautical miles at 14 knots, making this a fast, relatively compact cruiser. Eight 152 mm guns, six 100 mm guns, light anti-aircraft weapons, and two triple torpedo mounts supplied substantial offensive power. The 35 mm deck, 70 mm belt, and 90 mm turrets appear too light for comfortable medium-range combat, where even destroyer- and cruiser-caliber armor-piercing fire could be dangerous.
