Dry docks as a battleship-design constraint

A design that fits only two dry docks prompts a larger question: reduce the ship, or invest in the infrastructure needed to support it?

Notes

The video uses an early Tillman study to expose a real force-planning trade-off. The Bureau of Construction preferred to remove displacement and speed because only two American docks could take the design, whereas Tillman’s implied answer was to enlarge the dock system. Reducing a ship makes it supportable by the force that already exists, but expanding docks can preserve the ship’s intended capability while raising the cost of the whole programme. Ships, ports, repair facilities, and construction yards therefore form one connected capability rather than separate budget lines.
