Why Dreadnought was a practical firepower revolution

HMS Dreadnought combined familiar 12-inch guns with a doubled heavy broadside and flexible ranging groups, making her radical increase in firepower operationally usable.

Notes

The video contrasts Incomparable's exceptional calibre with HMS Dreadnought's practical use of established 12-inch weapons. Dreadnought doubled the usual four-gun heavy battery of an earlier battleship by bringing eight guns onto the broadside. Her layout also allowed several ranging patterns, including paired groups or a three-three-two sequence. Surviving accounts appear to favour the steadier centreline guns for ranging, with the wing turret joining after the range was established because rolling affected its position more. Dreadnought was revolutionary because its greater firepower could be controlled and employed, not simply because the ship was larger.
