The game's colonial dragoons are presented as a different social and military type from traditional horse guards. Horse-guard regiments are described as drawing more heavily from noble families, whereas dragoons could recruit people from middle- or lower-status backgrounds and train them to ride. Cavalry labels could therefore carry different recruitment cultures as well as battlefield roles. In this account, that social composition also made dragoons somewhat easier to control in the field because they were more accustomed to following orders.
