Is Britain committing to drones just as DragonFire and other counter-drone weapons may make them much easier to defeat?
Short answerPossibly: effective lasers and existing 76 mm guns can destroy cheap drones at scale, so the offensive cost advantage may not last.
NotesEffective lasers could destroy large numbers of cheap drones and upset the cost logic behind mass attacks. The existing OTO Melara 76 mm gun can already perform a similar close-defence role with suitable ammunition. Drones remain useful, but offensive concepts must account for rapidly improving defensive economics. Present drone advantages should not be treated as permanent.
