Chapter · 3:05:06-3:13:17

Douglas Haig as an absorber and administrator of doctrine

Haig's strength lay in absorbing ideas, building organizations, and disseminating doctrine, while original tactical insight and independent criticism were weaker parts of his command.

Notes

Haig is assessed as effective at absorbing doctrine, explaining it and organising staff around it. Senior command can use those skills to select and implement ideas supplied by others. The limitation identified is his difficulty generating or revising ideas independently when circumstances require it. His career also illustrates how professional ability and political relationships interact in promotion. This is an introductory assessment drawn from naval-history comparisons, with land warfare explicitly outside the usual teaching specialism.
