Dogger Bank simulations and the damaged-ship dilemma

An altered-force simulation tests how an early hit could force Germany to choose between escape and protecting a damaged ship.

Notes

The scenario was tried in more than one simulation. In the UAD version, software constraints led to a British force of two 15-inch fast battleships and three 13.5-inch battlecruisers, all set to 28 knots. That is a model of the proposed engagement, with a force substitution imposed by the game. The tactical result emphasised here is the danger of an early disabling hit on a German heavy ship other than Blücher. Slowing to protect it would let the faster British force close further and intensify its fire. The simulation supports the argument being explored without making that outcome a historical event.
