Chapter · 2:14:47-2:21:42

Dog boats used disguise, surprise, and close-range gunnery

A reading from Dog Boats at War follows British coastal forces from convoy protection into a deceptive, point-blank attack off IJmuiden.

Notes

Dog Boats at War follows the mixed motor gun boats and motor torpedo boats that guarded Channel routes and prepared for the invasion of Europe. In the March action read here, Lieutenant Commander McGowan approached IJmuiden using false E-boat call signs and deliberately poor Morse, closed to about 200 yards, and achieved surprise against a crowded enemy force. Shore fire damaged the attackers and caused casualties, but the boats withdrew after torpedo and gun attacks while confused defenders continued firing at one another.
