Patents, MAN, and naval submarine adoption

The closing timeline connects patent expiration and pre-combustion research with MAN engines for the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy submarine installations in 1913.

Notes

Diesel's original patents expired in 1908, while Prosper L'Orange pursued a pre-combustion-chamber injection system after discussions with Diesel. MAN became an early developer and supplier of diesel engines to the Royal Navy. British naval adoption could therefore depend on German engineering before the First World War. In 1913, the New London Ship and Engine Company, an Electric Boat subsidiary at Groton, installed diesels in U.S. Navy submarines. The sequence shows how quickly the machinery was becoming part of operational naval systems.
