Chapter · 42:34-43:55

Carrier-supported raiding groups

A carrier and two fast capital ships would combine reconnaissance, air attack and surface protection to choose which convoys to engage.

Notes

The proposed fleet could send out several groups built around a carrier and two fast capital ships. Aircraft would provide reconnaissance, air defence and long-range attack, while the capital ships protected the group against surface pursuit. British battlecruisers are treated as the main ships fast enough to catch it, though fighting two German capital ships would be dangerous. Renown's historical success is qualified by the orders constraining her opponents. Aircraft would help the raiders find convoys without an R-class battleship escort or attack that escort from a distance. These capabilities belong to the counterfactual force.
