Dido firepower, Black Swan ASW and Britain's specialist choice

Dido-class flexibility supplies the Type 26's spiritual analogy, but Black Swan-class submarine hunting better expresses the Royal Navy's operational requirement.

Notes

Dido-class cruisers supply the spiritual comparison for Type 26 because their 5.25-inch guns supported air defence, Tribal sweeps, attacks on land and surface targets, and sometimes convoy escort. The Royal Navy's operational requirement is closer to a Black Swan-class sloop, an anti-submarine specialist meant to destroy submarines before they reach the task group. Modern scarcity forces that specialist to carry strike and defensive tools too. The carrier and Type 45s already cover much of air warfare, leaving Type 26 to replace Type 23 in the submarine-hunting and strike roles. This contrast separates a ship's broad potential from the mission around which its hull and systems were designed.
