Engineering HMS Diamond Rock

British sailors turned a steep rock off Martinique into a commissioned stone frigate by hauling guns and supplies up its cliffs.

Notes

Samuel Hood used Diamond Rock as a fixed observation and blockade post near the approaches to Fort-de-France, helping to cover the port with fewer ships. Lieutenant James Wilkes Maurice secured an eight-inch hawser between a pinnacle on the rock and HMS Centaur's mainmast. A travelling block carried the suspended guns while the ship's capstan supplied the lifting effort. The work took about a week, and the shore party endured severe heat while lowering themselves over the cliff to keep the guns clear of projections as the ship moved. The commissioned stone frigate carried carronades and cannon that gave a small garrison substantial reach from commanding ground. Its main vulnerability was logistical: a tremor damaged the water-storage system and reduced a month's reserve to roughly two days. The position's endurance depended on engineering and supply despite its formidable defences.
