HMS Diamond and the limits of conventional deterrence

HMS Diamond introduces a lesson in why impressive firepower deters only when opponents believe a government will use it.

Notes

The opening uses the 1950 Daring-class destroyer as a case study in perception, resolve, and gunboat diplomacy. Military capability alone cannot compel an opponent who doubts that the state behind it is willing to act. Peaceful intent can coexist with calm, measured firmness that convinces a potential aggressor a boundary will be defended. Diamond shows how ships, political will, and an opponent's expectations can produce or undermine deterrence.
