Diadem's global service in an era of rapid change

China Station flagship duty, reserve service, and stokers' training work show a useful ship whose prime combat window closed quickly.

Notes

After repairs by her original builder, HMS Diadem became flagship on the China Station until 1907 and then returned to home and reserve duties. A 1909 refit and later use as a stokers' training ship kept the hull employed even after its intended combat role had faded. Her best fighting window may have been only a few years long because cruiser technology changed while the class was still completing. The pace is compared to computer obsolescence, where equipment only a few years old can already look dated. The analogy cautions against faulting a ship for lacking technology that did not exist when its requirements and machinery were fixed.
