Support for the SNP in devolved government need not mean support for Scottish independence. In this February 2025 interpretation, some voters favor locally focused representation while retaining the benefits of membership in the United Kingdom. Devolution allows them substantial control over Scottish affairs without accepting every cost of separate statehood. A similar argument applies to Wales, where cultural autonomy and support for the Welsh language can coexist with a preference for continued UK subsidies and other shared benefits. These are political interpretations of the situation at the time, and voter preferences can change.
