How the name Deutschland changed surface-raider priorities

An aside during the Barents Sea account explains how Deutschland's politically charged name influenced Hitler's caution and British targeting priorities.

Notes

Lutzow's former name, Deutschland, carried political risk beyond the ship's combat value. Hitler recalled the warship from northern waters after recognizing the symbolic damage that losing a vessel named for Germany could cause. Royal Navy priorities during the Graf Spee hunt reveal the opposite calculation: Graf Spee was dangerous in the South Atlantic, but Deutschland in northern waters was the more important target. The comparison shows how prestige and political perception can redirect operations even among broadly similar surface raiders. Force allocation therefore cannot always be explained by tonnage and tactical threat alone.
