The Tribal, Daring, and County classes were products of different Royal Navy force structures rather than a single uninterrupted destroyer story. Tribals were conceived while the fleet aimed to maintain about seventy cruisers, making their additional cruiser-like firepower supplementary. Darings entered a fleet with fewer cruisers but still a substantial cruiser force. By the County class, declining cruiser numbers pushed large destroyers openly into command, gun, missile, and broader fleet functions. The changing label therefore reflects force-structure needs as much as displacement or armament.

From Tribals to Counties: destroyers taking on cruiser functions
The closing comparison follows three generations of British destroyer design as shrinking cruiser numbers pushed later ships toward broader command, missile, and gun roles.
